The Cardboard Boat Race

Cambridge University students celebrated the end of exams last weekend on the day that’s dubbed ‘Suicide Sunday’ – apparantly named as it’s a veritable miracle the undergrads haven’t ended it all by this point. A recent component to the celebrations is the Cardboard Boat Race which involves the building and sailing of cardboard boats down the River Cam.

Teams of students take to Jesus Green, fashion crude boats out of cardboard, gaffer tape and glue and then sail down the Cam from Jesus Green to Magdalene Bridge and back in an event marking the beginning of May Week. Very few boats survive the journey with most competitors forced to bail out as their boats collapsed and sink – which is the whole point really. This year’s winning boat, HMS Neil, was built by Churchill College students studying engineering and maths and took five days and a kilometre of gaffer tape to complete. God bless all who sailed in her.
